Yoga Lifestyle

What is a Yoga Lifestyle?

Yoga as a lifestyle means far more than performing challenging poses or practicing breathing methods. Rather, yoga is rich, encompassing philosophy about all characteristics of how we live life. The ancient yogis spoke of the Eight Limbs of Yoga, which describe eight aspects of a yoga lifestyle. These are in essence a guide on how to achieve sense of balance and harmony between the mind, body, and spirit, both independently and in relationship with the world around us. Applying yoga principles to daily life means adopting healthy traditions and attitudes, ultimately leading to enlightenment or Samadhi.
The Bhagavad Gita said: “It’s not that you are just going into a corner, sitting with the spine erect and then doing some japa or some breathing and that is Yoga. My Yoga is everything. All that you do is Yoga. When you start doing something, do only that — one hundred percent that. ‘Yogaha karmasu kaushalam’ – that means perfection in your every act is Yoga.”

The Three Yoga Bodies

The yoga lifestyle can be summed up by the following famous quotation:

“When you do something, do it with one hundred percent of the mind. Don’t do it half way. Whatever you do, do it with full focus. That is Yoga.” (Swami Satchidananda)

Furthermore, a yoga lifestyle speaks to all three “yoga bodies”:

Physical Body: Bringing the body under the control of the mind and optimizing health

Astral Body: Includes the mental sheath where one experiences emotions; the pranic sheath where one experiences sensation; the intellectual sheath which guides the automatic mind in decision-making

Casual Body: The seed of the self (karana sharira), or a combination of the physical body and the astral body
